At an ETIA workshop on 3 September 2022 Melissa Strader and Kathryn Tonges explored the emotions that take us over and that make it difficult to shift gears or communicate how we want to. Two book reviews were the springboard for us to dive deep and discuss how the ideas from the books may be integrated with effective communication skills.
Melissa shared “Permission To Feel” by Professor Marc Brackett. Marc Brackett is a professor at Yale University’s Child Study Center and founding director of Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. Prof. Bracket’s prescription for healthy children (and their parents and teachers) is to help them understand and learn to manage their emotions more effectively. To help people become more emotionally skilled, Prof. Brackett has developed a practical 5 step approach. Melissa provided an overview of this approach to lead into the discussion. She has generously shared her PowerPoint presentation below.
Kathryn loved reading “Atlas of The Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience ” by Brené Brown. Brené Brown and her research team have mapped eighty-seven of the emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human and give language to what is going on within us and between us. Kathryn put together a 2 page overview/handout of the feelings and thoughts that Brené Brown lists in her book for your handy reference.
Together with ETIA Instructors we expanded our emotional literacy.
