Anne-Marije Bussink

Anne-Marije Bussink

Melbourne, VIC

Anne-Marije from 'The Inner Harmony Project' has a passion for helping women cultivate authentic and harmonious relationships in their lives through the practical skills of the 'Be Your Best' communication program. She has over 15 years of experience in teaching children and adults of all ages in group settings as well as privately. From 2013 onwards, as a holistic counsellor and communication facilitator, Anne-Marije has organised and facilitated workshops, retreats and training programs in a variety of self-development topics such as meditation, wholehearted living and effective communication. She originates from The Netherlands and in Australia she discovered just how ‘lost in translation’ she could be with the ‘slang-speaking’ Aussies. This led her to become fascinated by language and what makes people tick. So after she completed her theatre studies in 2006 she added qualifications in holistic counselling, family constellation work and effective communication whilst working in a variety of corporate companies.

My passion is my family and giving my children the best opportunities in life that I can. My mother participated in P.E.T when I was a young child and recommended the course to me, when I became a parent myself. She told me it was the ‘best thing’ she had done for her parenting skills. P.E.T has given me the skills to teach my children to be resilient, responsible and independent. I have also been able to apply these skills to all my relationships, especially with my husband, which has strengthened our relationship and opened up our communication channels. I enjoy passing on these skills to other parents and grandparents and seeing the positive changes in their families.

Question: Is there any job more important than parenting? Answer: Not that I can think of. Question: How much time and effort do we spend on improving our parenting skills? Answer: Not much. I’m interested in working with groups of fathers who want to invest in better relationships with their families. I want to be with people who are stretching out to be their best. I want to see the joy when they’ve had a really meaningful conversation with their child. And the pride they have when their child sorts through a problem, emerging stronger and better equipped to deal with their world. Anger and indignation are not what any of us wish to teach our kids, but too often we run out of options and default to hurtful behaviours. And negativity can quickly become the norm. PET can really change how it feels to be at home. PET changes the dynamic so people actually listen to each other and respond to each other in helpful and loving ways. I’m based in Elwood in Melbourne’s South and I run groups like Tupperware parties: You recruit the participants; we meet in your home, and you get a discount. It’s a great way to strengthen community ties. If you’re interested in taking it further, please call me on 0401 885 784.

Kathryn Tonges

Kathryn Tonges

Sunshine Coast & Brisbane, QLD

I began conducting 'Parent Effectiveness Training' courses in 1978 and have been deeply rewarded by seeing the positive transformations within families. I am filled with gratitude that the effective communication skills I learnt with P.E.T. have underpinned all the interactions with children and people in my life since then. My two sons are now parents and I am witness to their natural use of P.E.T. skills. In my teaching career I taught from early childhood to tertiary level focusing on Child Development and Communication Skills. Children, parenting, and effective communications became my passion. I lived in Beijing for seven years and conducted P.E.T. and BYB courses for expatriates as well as training expatriates to become P.E.T. instructors. I have written for parenting magazines in Beijing and Australia and blog for my website The Parent Within (theparentwithin.com). Whilst in Beijing I co-authored a book with P.E.T. Instructors I had trained, to help expatriate children cope with the changes in their life. Since returning to Australia in 2014 I have taken on the positions of State Executive Officer for ETIA Queensland and more recently President of ETIA Ltd. I am also a National Trainer of Instructors for ETIA Ltd. for P.E.T., B.Y.B., T.E.T. and Y.E.T. My passion to teach P.E.T. courses continues in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast as well as coaching parents individually.

I am an experienced P.E.T. instructor, having taught P.E.T. since 1996 to over 1000 parents. Importantly, I use the P.E.T. skills while raising my children - I endeavour to 'practice what I preach'. I have an Honours degree in Science, a Diploma in Counselling, and am an accredited mediator. In 2007 I was awarded the ACT Adult Learning Outstanding Teacher/Tutor award. Professionally, I worked as a counsellor, then manager, in a community organisation that specialised in counselling parents, children and young people. As manager and worker, I found the P.E.T. skills to be transferable across the workplace. I am a passionate advocate of P.E.T., and have presented posters on the topic at several international parenting conferences, as well as writing several articles on various aspects of P.E.T. I am a past member of the board of ETIA, and was the voluntary CEO in 2009/10. I am a blogger and writer, writing for my own website, and as both a paid and unpaid blogger on local and international websites.

I am a Counsellor, Psychotherapist and Parent Effectiveness Training instructor. I have been intensively studying parenting and child development since my son was born in 2006. I am passionate about PET because it helps parents to listen deeply and build warm loving relationships with their children whilst also giving parents practical skills for gaining cooperation from their kids, without using coercion and control. The foundation of effective communication and relationship skills provided by PET helps parents raise responsible, resilient kids and makes parenting easier and more joyful!

Leo Keegan

Thomas Gordon, the founder of the Effectiveness Training Institute, once said that ‘parents are often blamed but seldom trained’. When a person becomes a parent, usually in their mid to late twenties, the experience is probably the most significant life-altering event of their lives. Many rely on their instincts to guide them in their new role, others harken back to the approach used by their own parents, while others deliberately try to adopt approaches which are the opposite to that used by their own parents. Some oscillate from one approach to another, almost on a daily basis. In the confusion, some turn to reading up on parenting approaches but find these approaches can change as frequently as clothing fashions. As a P.E.T. Instructor, I offer parents a systematic, evidence based, skills-focused course that has stood the test of time. In my experience, course participants are seeking an opportunity to improve their parenting skills and their relationships with their children and their partner and to learn how to better manage life’s daily pressures. To help busy parents, I offer the course in a number of different configurations such as weekends and between school drop-off and pick-up times. My own background is in education where I found the skills most useful in my roles as a teacher, a Guidance Coordinator and a Deputy Principal. The skills were also very useful in my days as an AFL coach and umpire and, most importantly, in raising my own children. The P.E.T. model also informed much of my work when I was lecturing at the University of Fiji and in working with engineers, parliamentary educators, lawyers and indigenous groups here in Australia. My qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Western Australia, a Teachers’ Certificate from the Australian Catholic University, a Masters’ Degree in Education from the University of Wollongong, a course in pastoral counselling from the Yarra Theological Union and a Whole Brain Facilitation Certificate from Herrmann International Asia.
