Overview of Research and Outcome Studies in Australia and the US
Studies of Parent Effectiveness Training (PET) have produced evidence-based positive outcomes over a generation for Australian parents taking the course. A large investigation into the outcomes from 26 PET courses run by different instructors in six states of Australia (Wood, 2003) focused on the current relevance of PET for a radically changed society in which emotional health, interpersonal skills, and problem prevention have all been shown to be of crucial importance for parents and their families today. Experimental results showed PET groups achieved substantially and significantly higher scores than controls on the core skills of empathic listening, appropriate assertiveness and conflict resolution. Compared with controls the PET parents showed a significantly greater reduction in levels of parental stress about their family concerns.
